The Shoppach House was built in 1852 by John W. Shoppach, an immigrant from Germany. This brick structure was built with bricks made on site and was the first brick home in Saline County. The brick portion of the home is built in the “dog trot” style with two rooms on either side of a breezeway. It is unknown at this time when the ell shape containing the kitchen and dining rooms was added and the breezeway was enclosed forming an entry with double doors at the front and back of the house. Because there is a tintype photograph of the home with these changes in place, it is believed that the needs of the family changed and mid-construction the plans were modified.
The Shoppach house was home to 5 generations of the Shoppach family and contains items that belonged to family members. Also found in the house, are donated items of the same era from community members interested in the preservation of the history of Saline County. If you are interested in seeing this house in person, please contact us to schedule your group for a guided tour. |
